On the hillside overlooking one of the best of the world natural harbours, Newfoundland's capital (always spelt St. John's to distinguish it by the city of New Brunswick St. John). The location is spectacular and, unlike many towns, it covers its harbour, so that the ships come and go in its very heart. St. John's was the oldest city in North America that was founded by Europeans and used as a base for fishing boats from different countries since the 1500s, still today with a maritime feeling. Many of its tourist attractions are linked to a long and interesting history, but several of the best places to do here and in the area bring you closer to the wild – and even wild – fauna that makes eastern Newfoundland so interesting. The term "St. J.'s brilliantly coloured line houses" you'll hear is "Jellybean Row." This road is not necessarily one and can be applied to several groups of wooden painted houses covering the hillside. Take some time to walk (or climb) down the highways of Water St. and see these city icons.

Signal Hill National Historic Site
Several attractions make the National Historic Site of Signal Hill the top site for Signal Hill's visitors, overlooking the entrance to the harbour, and not least the 360° view that covers the town, harbour and sea. The Signal Hill and the harbour at the Visitor Centre are great places to discover the history and importance of this and the ruins of Queen's Battery, built in 1700.
Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site
The oldest, most surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland marks Cape Spear, the most eastern point of North America, on the dramatic cliffs just southeast of St. John's. The 1836 lighthouse was built in the centre of the keeper's house, restored to demonstrate the life of the lighthouse keeper from the 19th century. For 150 years, this was the home of the same family, when Cantwells worked to keep the light that sailed safely across the cape from the next generation.
The charming fishing community on the northern side of Signal Hill is now a resort for local craftsmen and craftsmen, who welcome visitors to their studios and workshops. This is an excellent place not only to buy good gifts and souvenirs but also to meet the artists, who are glad to demonstrate and talk about their work and answer questions.
